The Venue at AMEC

The covered arena

All public clinics, workshops, and symposia take place in the covered arena near the entrance to the Al Marah Equine Center (AMEC). Conveniently located next to the parking area and the show barn, this space provides both comfort and accessibility for participants and visitors. The covered arena offers shaded bleacher seating and protection from both rain and direct sun, ensuring a comfortable experience in any season. From the stands, visitors enjoy an unobstructed view of the Catalina Mountains, creating a spectacular backdrop for live demonstrations and lectures.

The arena sits slightly apart from the main research operations of AMEC, offering a quiet, focused environment ideal for learning and discussion. The only nearby activity comes from Bear Canyon Road, about 200 feet away. This upper section of AMEC is open to the public and not part of the biosecure research zone. We kindly ask that visitors remain in the public areas and do not enter the lower, biosecure sections of the facility.

Overnight Stabling

The Show Barn, located on Level 1 of the Al Marah Equine Center, sits directly beside the covered arena, offering convenient access for clinic and symposium participants. The barn features 12 × 12 ft stalls for most horses and two larger 12 × 20 ft stalls for bigger breeds. A grooming and wash area is available for use, and owners may turn out their horses for up to 30 minutes at a time in one of several nearby spaces:

  • a small paddock by the show barn,

  • the round pen behind the covered arena, or

  • a large paddock adjacent to the arena.

In the event of overflow, additional stabling is available in the Stud Barn next to the Show Barn. These stalls are also 12 × 12 ft but do not include exterior windows (see the last three photos in the carousel below). Stalls are offered at $20 per night (self-care). Please bring your own feed, hay, and shavings. If you require assistance with daily care or turnout, arrangements can be made with the EquiPhysics staff prior to arrival.

Biosecurity at AMEC

The Al Marah Equine Center (AMEC) is an active research and teaching facility with horses in various programs and studies. To ensure the health and safety of all animals on site, biosecurity is a top priority. Public clinics, workshops, and symposia primarily take place on Level 1 of AMEC, which includes the covered arena and show barn. These areas will be open to the public and specifically designated for events.

Please note the following guidelines for all visitors and participants:

  • Do not enter Levels 2–4 of AMEC without prior approval from AMEC staff. These lower levels house research and resident horses under controlled conditions.

  • Do not touch, feed, or handle any AMEC horses unless specifically authorized by staff.

  • Visiting horses must present proof of a negative Coggins test within the past 12 months and be up to date on vaccinations.

  • Owners are responsible for maintaining clean equipment and minimizing contact between visiting and resident horses.

By following these guidelines, visitors help maintain a safe and healthy environment for all horses and participants at AMEC.
